The Greatest Hits 2024 Movie Review – Hulu

The Greatest Hits

Living in the past, especially when grappling with grief, is a journey many can relate to. But when you add actual time travel into the mix, it creates a complex and intriguing narrative. “The Greatest Hits” walks this delicate line, offering glimpses of brilliance while occasionally stumbling along the way. Despite its flaws, the film ultimately shines through with its heartfelt storytelling.

Harriet (played by Lucy Boynton) has been struggling to cope with the sudden loss of her boyfriend Max (David Corenswet) for the past two years. Adding to her turmoil, she discovers she can travel back in time whenever she hears music associated with their relationship. Desperate to save Max in the past, Harriet isolates herself from the present, relying on her grief counselor (Retta) and best friend (Austin Crute) for support.

When Harriet meets David (Justin H. Min) at a grief group, a spark ignites between them. But how can she pursue a new relationship while tethered to the memories of her past with Max? This internal conflict forms the heart of the film as Harriet navigates her feelings for David while grappling with her vivid memories of Max.

Boynton delivers a standout performance, skillfully portraying Harriet’s emotional turmoil and the complexities of her time-traveling experiences. Min brings a charming awkwardness to his role as David, adding depth to the budding romance. Though Corenswet’s role is limited to memories, he effectively conveys Max’s presence in Harriet’s life.

Director Ned Benson brings a sense of style and emotional depth to the film, prioritizing the characters’ inner struggles over the intricacies of time travel. While the pacing may falter at times, Benson’s focus on the central question of moving forward in the face of grief resonates deeply. The film strikes a balance between poignancy and humor, culminating in an ending that prompts reflection and discussion.

Despite its narrative bumps, “The Greatest Hits” offers a compelling romantic dramedy with a unique twist. Whether you catch it in theaters or on Hulu, it’s worth experiencing for its heartfelt storytelling and standout performances.
