Franklin

Despite his notable presence in other historical adaptations and the annals of history, Benjamin Franklin remains a relatively minor character in the acclaimed musical “Hamilton,” which blends American Revolutionary fact and fiction. However, Franklin now takes center stage in an Apple TV+ drama featuring Michael Douglas. Here’s what you need to know about this new series:

Titled “Franklin,” the show does not attempt to cover Franklin’s entire life but rather focuses on a specific period. Adapted from Stacy Schiff’s book “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, And The Birth Of America,” the series hones in on a crucial mission assigned to Franklin. As the American colonies fight for independence against Britain, Franklin is sent to France with a critical task: to secure support from the French monarchy and ensure the survival of the burgeoning republic.

At the age of 70, Franklin embarks on this diplomatic mission, armed with intellect but lacking formal diplomatic experience. He navigates through a web of British spies, French informants, and political rivals to forge the Franco-American alliance of 1778.

Joining Michael Douglas in the cast are Noah Jupe as Temple, Franklin’s grandson, along with Thibault de Montalembert, Ludivine Sagnier, Eddie Marsan, and Theodore Pellerin as Marquis de Lafayette.

“Franklin” is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on April 12, with the release of the first three episodes. Subsequent episodes will be released weekly, leading up to the season finale on May 17.
