Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile is going to turn up the heat, with the director promising us a “lusty” version of Agatha Christie’s mystery tale.

Branagh, who directs and stars in the upcoming murder mystery movie, spoke to Empire’s latest issue about the film and he revealed that the sultry tone will be very different to that of his 2017 Christie adaptation Murder on the Orient Express.

Death On The Nile will see famous literary detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) attempt to solve a suspicious death on steamer boat Karnak as it sails down the River Nile, filled with characters who have shady secrets to hide.

Among the passengers are upper-class gentleman Simon Doyle (Armie Hammer), his wealthy new wife Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle (Gal Gadot) and his former fiancée Jacqueline de Bellefort.

Branagh revealed that he tried to steer away from a “milder, more reserved, more superficially cocktail language” and instead turned up the heat on the story.

“For me the inspirations were noir classics, Dial M For Murder, Double Indemnity and latter-day pictures, Body Heat, even Fatal Attraction,” he said. “These hot, lusty atmospheres. People in the grip of extreme passions do dangerous things.”

Branagh, who has also directed Thor and Cinderella, also spoke about the film’s exploration of a younger Poirot, with the movie featuring a First World War flashback that sees a digitally de-aged Branagh play the detective at 22.

“We get a chance to see not only what forged Poirot in the roughly-toughty world that people might not imagine him to have engaged with, that is action, and guns, and fighting and all of that, but also in the affairs of the heart,” he said.
