Newport News is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. It is located on the Virginia Peninsula, between the James River and the York River. The city has an area of 120 square miles (311 km²) and a population of approximately 179,000 people, making it the fifth-most populous city in Virginia.
